Arisohn + Murphy was engaged in 2017 by Adam America and Halstead Property Development Marketing to curate their forthcoming Long Island City residential development, Galerie. Situated directly across from MoMA PS1 in the richly artistic creative community of Long Island City, Galerie's goal was to infuse art into the everyday life of its residents and A+M was tasked to define and execute ways to make this dream a reality.
We knew from the start that the way to thoughtfully and sincerely represent the neighborhood's creative community was to work with local artists and arts organizations to create an aesthetic vision that represented the neighborhood's unique cultural history. With its own permanent art collection, sculpture garden and gallery space with curated exhibitions, we wanted Galerie to not only be a place that represented the local artistic community but supported it as well.
Arisohn + Murphy provided selections of artwork by local artists in a variety of mediums for all aspects of the building including project renderings, the Galerie Sales Center, and the forthcoming finished building. Working closely with the marketing team, landscape designer, rendering firm, construction team, and ownership, we selected works that fit the project's brand and identity as well as budget. It was important for the entire team to make sure all marketing materials truly represented the aesthetic vision and real artworks done by local artists - maintaining a cohesive vision in all print and digital material as well as physical installations in the Sales Center. In addition, we curated artwork for additional marketing collateral on the website and brochures, drew up licensing and copyright paperwork, and coordinating all necessary credit information.
As part of the physical build-out of the Galerie Sales Center, Arisohn + Murphy was able to utilize our extensive history and knowledge of art gallery construction to guide the construction team in order to present the artwork in a sophisticated and luxurious way. Recommendations included lighting locations and specifications, wall requirements for hanging artwork, HVAC requirements, and UV protection for the windows where artwork is displayed.
When curating the Galerie Sales Center, it was important to utilize many of the same artworks from the renderings in order to create a visual cohesiveness and continuity in the building's marketing and brand materials. With a final installation of over 40 different artworks, Arisohn + Murphy coordinated and execute the installation of all the artwork for the Galerie Sales Center launch. Our role was to ensure all parties had contracts in place, from loan and commission contracts to licensing agreements, overseeing all framing and transportation, as well as the installation. In addition, for the duration of the Galerie Sales Center opening, we will curate and execute numerous art rotations within the space to keep the presentation fresh and new, while representing as many diverse and unique artistic points of view from the community.
